We are excited to announce that Chris Callero, a longtime volunteer coach in our program has been named the 2014 Illinois Youth Soccer Recreational Coach of the Year.  The Recreation Coach of the Year is awarded to a recreation coach for his or her coaching activities, sportsmanship, player development, personal coaching development and involvement in the community.

Chris Callero has coached for the Ela Recreational program for many years and always steps up to coach multiple teams every season without hesitation. Chris’s coaching philosophy is fun first and foremost and with this approach the ability to help players of all skill levels learn and develop is that much more effective. This approach also helps the first time recreational player grow to love the sport and keep playing.   In all the seasons and through all the teams we have only had positive feedback for Coach Chris, which is an accomplishment in itself.  The greatest testament to Coach Chris can be found in the words of families he has coached –

“ …..Coach Chris is an exceptionally positive, kind, and caring person who has a unique ability to bring out the same qualities in his teams…..”

“ ….But more than teaching soccer skills, Coach Chris is exceptional because of the way he teaches kids to have positive attitudes towards the game, themselves, and their teammates. He does this mostly by his own example of positivity and encouragement. He is always calm, warm, kind, and personable on and off the soccer field. He makes his players feel safe and unintimidated so they are able to take risks on the field and perform to their best ability. It is obvious to players and parents that the focus is on giving each player the opportunity to reach their highest potential and not just on scoring or winning the game…..”

Chris will receive the award at the Illinois Youth Soccer Awards Banquet on March 6th.

Congratulations Coach Chris on a well-deserved honor!
