U12 RED GIRLS UNDE"FEETED" ROCKFORD PUMA CUP

by Jennifer Peldiak

April 21-22, The feet of Champions

Game 1 vs. Elm Grove SC
This Wisconsin based team proved to be Ela's first tie game of the tournament.

In a virtually penalty-free game, both defenses proved equally impenetrable. 10 unsuccessful shots on goal when finally, Leah McCoy passed to Olivia Stomberg who scored Ela's only point. Opponent shots on goal, 5 in first half and 11 in second half against goalies Emma Daleske and Sophia Sarkis.

In the second half, a diminished energy level seemed to keep girls from scoring while Elm Grove was able to get past consistently tough defenders Grace Kinsey, Molly Machala and Rebecca Riekki for their single point.

This set the Ela U12 Red Girls off to a less than desirable tournament start.

Game 2 vs. Appleton SC
Ela took on yet another unknown out of state opponent later the first day. They were up for a tough match. Appleton proved to have excellent speed and ball handling as well as a rougher style of play. Being frequently "outsized" however has made this team savvy players. Emma Daleske played her best game of the tournament (although the tournament was one of Emma's best played all together). Aggressive leadership on the field plus persistence and precision passing proved an ultimate formula for success. McCoy, Andrea Kamins and Kelsey Kee moved the ball down the sides while other midfielders Samantha Everhart, Carley Peldiak and Grace Kinsey positioned the ball for scoring. One unassisted goal by Kristin Brousseau tied the score 1-1, then Appleton slid in making the score 1-2 at the half.

In the second half, Brousseau scored again off a corner kick from Riekki and Daleske swept down the field catching the goalie out of the box, moving in for a gentle and successful goal. Sarkis held off 16 other shots on goal and the entire team held the score at 3-2 for the remaining 10 minutes of the game.

Game 3 vs. Panthers SC
The match began with Ela Girls needing a win to advance to the finals. The Appleton team was ahead by 6 tournament points.

Wind and an interestingly disagreeable father-son referee duo made the game just that much more exciting.

Demonstrating depth and adaptability the girls effectively played various positions to strategically out play their opponents. Brousseau, Kamins, Peldiak and Riekki all attempted shots on goal. The successful goals came from a flying scissor kick by Kamins off a corner kick by Riekki; A perfectly executed assist by Brousseau for score by Everhart and a long shot high and over the goalie's hands by Riekki from 30 yards out.

The pressure kept defenders and midfielders Machala, Kinsey, Kee, Peldiak, McCoy, Kamins and Daleske talking through plays and executing with mutual intent.

Final score 3-0. The win, the points scored and the shutout put the Ela U12 Red Girls into the Championship match against a team from Kansas City.

Game 4 vs. KC Force
Although the KC Force proved worthy opponents, their defense seemed just porous enough for the Ela offense. A game total of 14 shots on goal resulted in just one success by Everhart with smooth progressive passing assists by Brousseau and Stomberg. Machala, Kinsey and Daleske were particularly relentless in keeping the KC offensive in unsuccessful scoring positions.

Midfielders Kamins, Daleske, Peldiak, McCoy, Kee, Everhart and Riekki kept up the pressure allowing only one goal by KC.

A game and tournament shoot out followed the final score of 1-1.

First shot by KC stopped by Sarkis. First shot Ela, score by Riekki. Second shot KC over the net. Second shot Ela, score by Everhart. Third shot KC over the net. Third shot Ela, over the net by Stomberg. Fourth shot KC score. Fourth shot Ela, over the net by Brousseau. Fifth shot KC score. Fifth shot Ela, score by Daleske winning the game and the tournament.

Special kudos to Sarkis for near full-time goal intensity and for Daleske's superior leadership on the field and part time goal keeper.
